Peter
Rebuilding Hope After a Devastating Scam
At 65, Peter* was searching for companionship after losing his wife. What he believed was a genuine online relationship turned out to be a sophisticated love scam that cost him nearly S$300,000.
But the financial loss was only part of the damage. Overwhelmed by shame, guilt and self-blame, Peter withdrew from family and friends and struggled to see a way forward.
Through a referral, Peter came to SAGE Counselling Centre. In a safe and supportive environment, he received professional counselling to help him process the trauma, rebuild his confidence, and reconnect with those around him. Over time, he found the strength to move forward with hope again.
Sadly, Peter’s story is not unique. More seniors are falling victim to scams that exploit loneliness and social isolation. While the financial losses can be significant, the emotional wounds often run even deeper.
Your support helps SAGE provide affordable counselling and emotional support to vulnerable seniors facing scam-related trauma, grief, loneliness and other life challenges.
When a senior loses hope, counselling can help them find their footing again. With your generosity, more seniors like Peter can receive the care and support they need to rebuild their lives and look to the future with renewed confidence.
Lilian
When Lilian (pseudonym) first came to SAGE Counselling Centre in January 2024, she was carrying the emotional weight of a painful divorce and the quiet exhaustion of trying to hold her family together. Referred by Lakeside Family Service Centre, she sought support not for herself alone, but for the person she loved most. Her teenage son, who had been diagnosed with ADHD.
As a devoted mother, Lilian poured every ounce of her energy into understanding her son’s condition and ensuring he received the medical, psychological, and educational support he needed. Even after the divorce, she chose to continue living with her ex-husband in the hope of preserving stability and a fatherly presence for her son. She believed that enduring her own discomfort was a sacrifice worth making for her child’s well-being.
But over time, the emotional cost became overwhelming.
What began as an attempt to protect her son slowly exposed both mother and child to ongoing verbal abuse, emotional tension, and increasing instability at home. As conflicts escalated and legal proceedings threatened to disrupt her son’s living arrangements, Lilian found herself emotionally drained, fearful, and uncertain about the future.
Behind her quiet resilience was a woman struggling to cope alone.
Counselling became a turning point in her journey.
Through regular counselling sessions, Lilian found something she had not experienced in a long time. A safe and compassionate space where she could finally breathe, speak openly about her fears, and begin healing from the emotional turmoil she had endured. Session by session, she gradually rediscovered her inner strength, clarity, and hope for the future.
Reflecting on her journey, Lilian shared:
“During our counselling sessions, your empathy and professionalism created a safe haven where I could release my emotions and regain strength for my ongoing journey.”
She also expressed:
“Your guidance has been a valuable source of support, helping me find clarity and strength in navigating the many challenges at the crossroads of my life.”
In gratitude, she shared:
“I am finally able to share the joy and peace of my newly settled life. Your guidance and support helped me through one of the most difficult periods of my journey. No words can fully express my gratitude.”
With continued community support, SAGE Counselling Centre can continue
providing compassionate and accessible counselling services to individuals like Lilian, ensuring that
“no one has to face life’s struggles alone”
Mr Chen & Mdm Lim
A Lifetime Together, A Difficult Goodbye
For more than 50 years, Mr Chen (76) and Mdm Lim (75) shared almost every aspect of life together.
The childless couple, both retired factory workers, relied deeply on one another as they grew older. For Mdm Lim, her husband was not only her life partner but also her primary source of comfort, security, and support.
When Mr Chen began experiencing persistent tongue ulcers and deteriorating health, he repeatedly avoided follow-up treatment despite medical advice. Beneath his reluctance was a profound fear: if he was hospitalized, who would care for his wife?
Recognising the risks early, SAGE social workers Mr Leonard Lee and Ms Ellen Tay began working closely with the couple. Through patient engagement, counselling, advocacy, and care coordination, they sought to help Mr Chen overcome his fears and access the medical treatment he needed
Building trust took time.
Over many months, our social workers journeyed alongside the couple, listening to their concerns, addressing anxieties, and providing the encouragement needed to navigate difficult decisions. Their work extended beyond medical issues to understanding the emotional realities that shaped the couple’s choices.
When Mr Chen was eventually admitted to hospital, Mdm Lim became overwhelmed with fear and distress. Unable to bear being apart from her husband, she spent two nights sleeping in the hospital lobby because she could not visit him in the Intensive Care Unit.
Seeing her vulnerability, our social workers went beyond coordinating services. They provided emotional reassurance, spent time listening to her fears, helped her regain a sense of stability, and worked closely with healthcare professionals and community partners to ensure both husband and wife received the support they needed.
At the same time, they guided elderly relatives who were struggling to cope with the growing caregiving responsibilities, helping to coordinate care plans, mediate difficult conversations, and navigate complex decisions during a highly emotional period.
When Mr Chen was eventually diagnosed with cancer and underwent major surgery, our social workers continued to stand by the family, providing the continuity of care, advocacy, and emotional support that vulnerable seniors often need during life-changing illnesses.
Sadly, Mr Chen passed away from cancer on 26 March 2026.
For Mdm Lim, the loss was devastating. Following further assessments, she was later diagnosed with dementia and eventually moved into a nursing home for her safety and ongoing care needs.
Yet our support did not end with her husband’s passing.
Our social workers continued to journey alongside Mdm Lim as she navigated grief, confusion, and the difficult transition into residential care. Through compassionate support and ongoing engagement, they helped her adjust to a new chapter of life while preserving her dignity and sense of belonging.
Mr Chen and Mdm Lim’s story is a reminder that ageing, illness, dementia, and loss affect not only individuals but entire support networks. It also reflects the critical role that skilled social workers play in helping vulnerable seniors navigate some of life’s most challenging moments.
Your support makes this possible.
